British-Nigerian makeup artist, Jennie Jenkins, who has risen to fame for her ingenious beauty tutorials and consistency over the years, hasn’t always had it quite lush. She has battled with skin issues for years. Jenkins, who was sometimes teased whenever she’d reveal her face without make-up has been open about her hyperpigmentation issues. But now, she has found a remedy, and is sharing it with the world.

Those of us who have dealt with problem skin know all too well the long tenuous process that comes with finding what works so when one of us finds a solution, best believe we’re sharing!

Like Jennie, many black women suffer from hyperpigmentation. It is the darkening or discoloration of certain areas of the skin which can be caused by several factors, including injury, acne, trauma, sunlight or a skin disease. While the natural darker pigmentation can have a protective effect, the discoloration can be frustrating. However, hyperpigmentation can be successfully treated.

In this video, Miss Jenkins speaks on her journey and how she’s been able to get rid of hyperpigmentation.

According to Style Craze,  if you are genetically prone to acquire hyperpigmentation, it is best to take preventive measures as follows:

  • Whether you step out or not, use a sunscreen to protect you from harmful UVA rays, which is one of the primary causes to this condition.
  • Avoid tan by wearing long sleeved clothes, sunglasses.
  • Do not burst or prick pimples, rashes and other inflammations.
  • Make sure you have a good amount of vitamin C in your diet.
  • Avoid any creams, lotions or face products that may cause a burning sensation.
  • Avoid too much makeup, especially on the affected area. It may hide the pigmentation, but it may also harm the skin.
  • Visit a dermatologist to discuss the signs of pigmentation and share previous medical history too.
  • Try not to opt for procedures, which can scar your skin
  • Prevent acne outbreaks by taking proper care of your skin.
