I finally sat down to watch the Ruth & Boaz movie on Netflix, produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, and I’m so glad I did. Bible-inspired films don’t come around often, so when one lands in the Top 10 across countries, you know it’s striking a chord.

Early in the film, Naomi (played by Phylicia Rashad) says, “Finding love, true love is one of God’s greatest wonders.” That line lingered with me. The story wastes no time showing us why love — in all its forms — matters. Ruth (Serayah) isn’t just wrestling with romance; she’s figuring out who she really is versus who everyone expects her to be. She even walks away from her singing career with no money to fall back on, a decision that felt brave and painfully relatable.

Naomi’s heartbreak hit me the hardest. She loses her husband, her son, her home, and the security she built her life around. Watching her throw away her cross was one of those moments that said so much without words, how grief can shake your faith in ways you never thought possible.

But what I loved most was Ruth’s determination. Instead of folding, she takes up work in the vineyards, and that choice leads her straight into destiny. And then there’s her connection with Boaz (Tyler Lepley). The chemistry was sweet and believable, enough to make me smile more than once. When Ruth admits she hadn’t been fully honest, and Boaz replies that he should have listened to what she wasn’t saying… whew. That kind of grace in love feels rare on screen.

The film also reminded me of what community should look like. When the church rallied to rebuild Naomi and Ruth’s home, it felt like a picture of faith in action, not just prayer, but presence. And when Ruth sang “All My Life You Have Been Faithful” — goosebumps. By the time Naomi confessed that anger had blinded her to God’s goodness, I felt like the story had come full circle. Her putting the cross back at the end was a quiet but powerful finish.

Even little details stood out: the wine store that burned down but left the wine perfectly intact, like a symbol that sometimes what matters most is preserved. It’s those touches that make the story more than just a retelling; it’s personal, emotional, and full of hope.

If you haven’t watched Ruth & Boaz yet, you’re honestly missing one of Netflix’s most moving stories this season. It’s faith, it’s romance, it’s redemption, and it’s worth every minute.

If you’ve seen A Week Away on Netflix, you’ll know it’s not your typical teen movie. Imagine High School Musical vibes, but set at a Christian summer camp. Think campfires, music, and first love, but woven into a faith-based story about second chances.

The film follows Will, a troubled teen who finds himself at a Christian summer camp. Between the catchy reimagined songs, the hopeful themes, and the sweet romance, it’s earned fans who describe it as “wholesome,” “uplifting,” and the kind of feel-good comfort watch you can put on again and again. Of course, some have called it cheesy and predictable — but that’s part of its charm. It’s light, it’s heartfelt, and it leaves you humming long after.

But the story doesn’t end there. A Week Away has now grown into a full series, taking the same idea — faith, friendship, and camp life — but with brand new characters and stories at Camp Aweegaway. It’s not a retelling of the movie, but a continuation of its spirit. Instead of just one weekend of music and camp adventures, the series stretches those themes into a season-long journey with competitions, challenges, and the emotional highs and lows of growing up.

The episodes lean into the same strengths that made the movie a hit: vibrant music, hopeful storytelling, and that sense of community and belonging that faith-based stories often bring. Streaming exclusively on Angel Studios, the seven-episode series drops new episodes every Thursday, giving fans more time to sink into the camp experience and watch the new cast create fresh bonds.

Whether you loved the movie and want more, or you’re discovering it all for the first time, A Week Away now offers both: a one-sitting film that feels like a summer playlist, and a series that expands it into something bigger, brighter, and ready to keep growing.

When I first clicked play on Tyler Perry’s Straw, I thought I was just watching a movie. I wasn’t just emotional at the end, I was undone. As a Christian woman, it didn’t feel like fiction. It felt familiar.

Janiyah wasn’t crazy—she was crushed. A single mother fighting for her child, ignored by the system, stretched beyond human capacity. And while her actions were extreme, her exhaustion wasn’t. That’s what made it hurt. Because for many of us, Straw isn’t entertainment. It’s a reflection.

So many Christian women are silently carrying the weight of their homes, families, jobs, and ministries. We’ve learned how to smile through the stress, quote Scripture through the anxiety, and show up when we’re running on empty. But Straw shows what happens when a woman isn’t seen—until she breaks.

One question haunted me throughout the film: Where was the church? Where was the support system? The prayer circle? The intervention before the explosion?

We often tell women to be strong, to “have faith,” to pray it away. But prayer alone is not a replacement for help. God uses therapy. He works through community. He heals through conversation, not just silence.

Watching Straw reminded me that faith doesn’t mean pretending you’re okay. It means trusting God enough to admit when you’re not. Janiyah’s story may be fictional, but her pain is real for many women—even women of faith.

So if you’ve been pushing through, quietly struggling, or feeling invisible, let this be your reminder: You are allowed to rest. To ask for help. To fall apart and still be held by God.

Straw wasn’t just a film. It was a wake-up call—to look around, check in, and care deeply. Because nobody should have to reach a breaking point just to be heard.

When Netflix announced Mary, a film about the life of the Virgin Mary, I was intrigued. A fresh take on one of the most revered figures in history? It definitely had potential and was a refreshingly different story. But sometimes, potential isn’t enough.

Visually, the film gets some things right. The cinematography and production design are solid, creating an immersive historical setting. But the storytelling? That’s where it loses me. The pacing feels uneven, jumping from one moment to the next without giving enough depth to Mary’s journey. Instead of feeling connected to her struggles and triumphs, I felt detached, like an outsider looking in.

The film also tries to humanize Mary, which is an interesting approach, but in doing so, it seems to strip away much of the grace and significance that make her story so powerful. Anthony Hopkins as King Herod had potential, but even his performance felt uninspired. The film had all the elements to be deeply moving, yet somehow, it just didn’t land.

I couldn’t finish it not because it was offensive or controversial, but because it felt hollow. A story as rich and layered as Mary’s deserves nuance, depth, and emotional weight, which this film, unfortunately, didn’t deliver. I give it a 5/10 for effort, but it just didn’t resonate the way it should have.

Would I recommend it? If you’re curious, sure. But if you’re looking for something that truly captures the essence of Mary’s journey, this might not be it.

Have you watched Mary? What did you think? Let’s discuss!

This African girl magic just won’t let up! Queens, it is our time. We keep breaking boundaries across the world in the diverse industries. There’s really no stopping us.

One Queen that is seriously slaying both in and out of the continent is South African actress, Pearl Thusi.

The star has indeed come a long way in her career. From her early beginnings as a presenter, to landing roles in popular international series like Quantico, to starring as a warrior princess in fantasy thriller, Scorpion King.

And now, Pearl is set to star in Netflix‘s first African original series, Queen Sono, which is set to begin production in South Africa in 2019.

According to Daily Sun:

Pearl will play a top spy in a South African agency who must tackle dangerous cases while facing the changing relationships in her personal life.

The series is created and will be directed by comedian and actor Kagiso Lediga.

According to Netflix, the series is set in the world of espionage with a touch of humour.

Announcing the news, Pearl took to her Instagram to state:

“It feels kind of crazy overtime I’m about to say it, I’m going to be starring in Africa’s very first Netflix original, this is crazy it is amazing not just for me but for everyone.”

We totally agree with Pearl. When one of us wins, we all win!

It’s been over a year since our favourite President, Barack Obama, exited the White House and now, according to CNBC, he and former first lady, Michelle, have signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix to produce movies and series. The deal includes scripted and unscripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.

In a statement, Barack said, “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The Obamas, who have kept a relatively low profile since leaving office, established a company named Higher Ground Productions, which will be managing the project.

According to a New York Times report from earlier this year, sources knowledgeable about to the Obama/Netflix partnership made it clear that the former POTUS has no plans of creating any programs centred on or addressing President Trump and The White House. Instead, Obama wants to produce “shows that highlight inspirational stories.”

“Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly recognised public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better,” Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, stated.

We can’t wait to see what comes of this partnership. Something tells me it’s going to be a show stopper, literally. Again, black excellence wins and we’re loving it.
