Hair. For women, it’s never just hair. It’s identity, pride, culture, and sometimes controversy. Whether you’ve embraced your natural hair or chosen the sleek look of a relaxer, the conversations around hair are never simple.

Natural hair is beautiful and versatile, but it requires attention. To keep it healthy and strong, focus on moisturising regularly — use water-based leave-in creams, natural oils like coconut or shea, and avoid heavy products that weigh it down. Detangle gently using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to prevent breakage. Protective hairstyles like braids, twists, or buns can reduce stress on your strands and promote growth, and deep condition once a week to restore strength. Even simple habits, like sleeping with a satin scarf or pillowcase, make a big difference.

Relaxed hair can feel easier to manage day-to-day, but it’s not maintenance-free. Moisturise your ends daily, as relaxed hair can dry out faster. Use heat protectants when styling, avoid overprocessing or over-straightening, and touch up roots carefully to prevent breakage. Regular trims keep your hair looking neat and prevent split ends from moving up the strand. Hair masks or protein treatments once a month can strengthen hair weakened by chemicals.

And then there’s the debate that sometimes surfaces in faith circles — some people claim relaxing your hair is a sin, that it’s “rejecting the hair God gave you.” For many women, that perspective adds an unnecessary layer of guilt to what should be a personal choice. What matters is that you care for your hair in a way that works for your life, your schedule, and your comfort.

Here’s the thing: neither natural nor relaxed hair is inherently better or easier. Some women love the pride, texture, and versatility of natural hair; some love the sleekness, confidence, and low-maintenance style of relaxed hair; some switch between the two depending on mood or season. What truly matters is care, not judgment.

At the end of the day, your hair is your crown. How you wear it, care for it, or change it doesn’t make you better or worse — it makes you, you. Giving it the attention it deserves, whether natural or relaxed, is part of taking care of yourself.

Some days, you just want to look good without having to call a makeup artist, maybe you’re going to church, a friend’s gathering, or just stepping out for yourself. Whatever it is, having a few basic items and knowing how to make them work can make a world of difference.

You don’t need a huge collection or every product under the sun. Start with the basics: a foundation that matches your skin (around ₦4,000–₦10,000), a concealer for under eyes or spots (₦2,000–₦7,000), and a light setting powder (₦2,000–₦6,000) to keep everything smooth. A touch of blush and highlighter (₦3,000–₦8,000) brings warmth and glow, while a simple neutral eyeshadow palette (₦3,000–₦9,000), mascara, and eyeliner (₦2,000–₦5,000 each) open up your eyes effortlessly. Finish with a lipstick or gloss you love (₦2,000–₦6,000) and a few basic brushes or a sponge (₦1,000–₦4,000), and you’re ready to go.

When it comes to application, keep it simple. Start with foundation and concealer to even out your skin, lightly set it with powder, add a soft sweep of blush and highlighter to your cheeks, and gently define your eyes with neutral shadow, eyeliner, and mascara. Finish with a lip colour you feel confident in. The whole process becomes second nature once you practice a few times.

A few little tips can make a big difference: check your foundation in natural light to make sure it matches, keep a compact powder or blotting paper handy for touch-ups, and remember — it doesn’t have to be perfect to look polished. The goal isn’t a flawless glam session; it’s looking like your best, confident self.

If you need a bit more guidance, there are lots of step-by-step tutorials on YouTube that can help you master the basics at your own pace, like this. You can pause, rewind, and practice until you find the rhythm that works for you.

At the end of the day, doing your own makeup isn’t about perfection or showing off. It’s about giving yourself a little care, a little confidence, and stepping out as your best self — for church, a casual outing, or just because you feel like it.

Beauty Beyond the Mirror: Seeing Yourself Through God’s Eyes https://queenmoremi.com/2025/03/beauty-beyond-the-mirror-seeing-yourself-through-gods-eyes/ Tue, 25 Mar 2025 15:37:42 +0000 https://queenmoremi.com/?p=5515 Beauty is a tricky thing. Beauty is a tricky thing. The world tells us it’s found in flawless skin, the perfect figure, or how well we fit into ever-changing trends. But what if we’ve been looking at it all wrong? What if true beauty has nothing to do with the mirror and everything to do with how God sees us?

In a world obsessed with aesthetics, it’s easy to tie our worth to outward appearances. A good hair day? Confidence skyrockets. A breakout? Suddenly, we’re questioning everything. But the Bible reminds us of something different: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). God’s definition of beauty isn’t about high cheekbones or a snatched waist; it’s about the light that shines from within.

Think about it. The most beautiful people you’ve met probably weren’t the ones with perfect features but the ones whose kindness, confidence, and love for others made them unforgettable. Proverbs 31:30 puts it plainly: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” The kind of beauty that lasts, the kind that truly matters, is rooted in character, grace, and a heart that reflects God’s love.

That doesn’t mean we should neglect self-care or stop enjoying fashion and makeup. Dressing well, doing your skincare routine, and feeling good in your body are great! The difference is when our reflection determines our worth instead of God’s truth. When we stop seeing ourselves through the distorted lens of comparison and start embracing how God sees us- fearfully and wonderfully made- something shifts.

So, the next time you catch yourself critiquing the person staring back at you in the mirror, take a moment. Speak life over yourself. Replace every self-doubt with God’s promises. You are enough, just as you are. Your beauty is deeper than skin, it’s in the love you show, the faith you carry, and the purpose you walk in every day.

Because real beauty? It was never about the mirror in the first place. ✨

Skincare Myths Every Woman Needs to Stop Believing https://queenmoremi.com/2025/03/skincare-myths-every-woman-needs-to-stop-believing/ Mon, 24 Mar 2025 15:27:45 +0000 https://queenmoremi.com/?p=5512 When it comes to skincare, there’s a lot of advice floating around, from your mom’s trusted remedies to the latest TikTok trends. When it comes to skincare, there’s a lot of advice floating around, from your mom’s trusted remedies to the latest TikTok trends. But not everything you hear is actually true. Some of these myths do more harm than good, and it’s time to set the record straight. Let’s talk about the skincare myths we need to leave behind once and for all.

“Oily Skin Doesn’t Need Moisturizer” If you’ve ever skipped moisturizer because you think your skin is “already oily enough,” you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: Oily skin still needs hydration! When you don’t moisturize, your skin overcompensates by producing even more oil, which can lead to breakouts. Opt for lightweight, oil-free or water-based moisturizers to keep your skin balanced and happy.

“Natural Ingredients Are Always Better” We know everyone LOVES a good DIY skincare moment, but not all natural ingredients belong on your face. For example, lemon juice can irritate your skin, while baking soda can mess with your PH balance, and coconut oil can clog your pores. While natural skincare does have its benefits, not every kitchen ingredient is your friend. Always research and patch-test before trying a new product.

“You Don’t Need Sunscreen If You Have Dark Skin.” Listen guys, melanin is magical, but it’s not a built-in SPF. Sun damage affects all skin tones, and skipping sunscreen can lead to hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer! A broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) is a MUST!, even on cloudy days, yes.

“The More You Exfoliate, The Better” Scrubbing your skin every day might feel satisfying, but over-exfoliation can actually weaken your skin barrier, leaving it irritated and sensitive. Instead of going overboard, stick to 2-3 times a week with gentle exfoliants to keep your skin glowing without the damage.

“Expensive Skincare Works Better” Luxury products are nice, but price doesn’t always equal compatibility. There are plenty of affordable skincare products packed with powerhouse ingredients that work just as well (if not better) for you than high-end brands. Instead of focusing on price tags, look for products with proven ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and retinol that are effective on your skin.

The best skincare routine is one that works for you, backed by science and not just social media trends. So, let’s leave these myths behind and embrace skincare that makes sense. Your skin deserves it!

The Harvard Students Who Built Halo Braid the Hair-Braiding Robot https://queenmoremi.com/2025/01/the-harvard-students-who-built-halo-braid-the-hair-braiding-robot/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 14:50:43 +0000 https://queenmoremi.com/?p=6466 When you think of innovation, you probably picture flying cars or AI assistants, not a robot that can braid hair. When you think of innovation, you probably picture flying cars or AI assistants, not a robot that can braid hair. But that’s exactly what two Harvard students, Yinka Ogunbiyi and David Afolabi, have created. Their invention, Halo Braid, is a first-of-its-kind braiding robot that’s changing how we think about beauty, technology, and culture all at once.

Ogunbiyi and Afolabi built Halo Braid to solve a problem every Black woman knows too well: spending hours at the salon for braids. Their machine cuts that time from nearly six hours to just thirty minutes, giving stylists the chance to double their business while saving clients precious time.

The duo recently won Harvard’s 2025 President’s Innovation Challenge, taking home the grand prize for their breakthrough. But beyond the money and recognition, what stands out is how they’ve managed to merge tech and texture — creating a solution rooted in both innovation and identity.

Halo Braid isn’t trying to replace stylists. It’s designed to work with them, handling the repetitive motions while leaving room for the artistry that makes each braid style unique. It’s a reminder that technology doesn’t have to erase culture; it can actually protect it.

From the lab to the salon chair, Halo Braid is a glimpse of what it looks like when innovation listens to culture instead of trying to rewrite it. It’s proof that the future of tech can be inclusive, creative, and yes — beautifully braided.

Over the years, the beauty industry has expanded and has made Nigeria and Africa, a promising platform for beauty entrepreneurs and the beauty market generally.

With the increasing number of women in Africa, especially middle class women spending more on personal beauty products and services, the beauty industry has fast become a promising sector that has boosted the economy in Africa. Entrepreneurs and companies now invest majorly in the booming beauty industry, and we can see evidence of all this around us –  from the rise of beauty influencers, to international beauty brands launching new products in the country regularly – it is safe to see that these trends are here to stay.

According to Borgen Magazine, with the vast investments into Africa in the beauty industry, the personal care and beauty markets of Nigeria and South Africa have reached $1.2 billion and $2.1 billion, respectively.

One key player in the Nigerian beauty market that is making a great impact is millennial queen boss, Ezinne Alfa of Beauty In Lagos.

The website was launched in January 2012 as a blog positioned to share all that the city of Lagos had to offer in terms of beauty but now,  Beauty In Lagos has evolved into being the number 1 online destination for beauty in Nigeria.

When she first returned to Nigeria from the UK, Ezinne said it took her a while to know where to get beauty products and services that she needed. As she made inquiries and researched, she decided to share her information with others through her blog. In her words, “Beauty blogging is vast, it is about sharing knowledge about beauty in any form the person finds comfortable”.

True art pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms and ideals. This fashion editorial tagged ‘Beyond Complexion’ does just that, and we love it.

These photos serve as a reminder that we are all beautiful, and the idea that we all should conform to one standard of beauty is simply erroneous.

According to stylist, Fayosola Aina, the aim of the editorial is to raise awareness about albinism and redefine perceptions about beauty.

We love it!
