U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited tensions with Nigeria by publicly ordering the U.S. military to prepare for possible action against the African nation. He accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from extremist violence and stated that the United States would stop all aid if the situation did not improve.

According to multiple reports, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has prepared three escalating operational plans — “light,” “medium,” and “heavy” — that could include support for Nigerian forces, drone strikes, or even full-scale military deployment.

In response, the Nigerian government rejected Trump’s claims. It stressed that violence in Nigeria affects people of all faiths and said it remains committed to religious tolerance. Nigerian officials also emphasised that any foreign military operation would require its consent to preserve national sovereignty.

Analysts warn that while the rhetoric is serious, actual U.S. military intervention is unlikely without a coordinated Nigerian agreement. They also note that oversimplifying Nigeria’s complex security challenges — which span insurgency, communal conflict, and economic instability — into a purely religious narrative is both inaccurate and risky.

Still, the questions hang heavy: What would U.S. involvement mean for Nigeria’s sovereignty? Could it bring real change, or just add more pressure? As debates continue, one truth remains clear — the world is watching, and so are Nigerians, waiting to see what unfolds next.

Women’s health has too often been treated like a side note, but a new initiative is changing that. RenewHER, a Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative led by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health (OSSAP-WH) and championed Medical Doctor, Adanna Steinacker, is Nigeria’s bold step to make women’s health a national priority, tying it directly to economic equity and long-term reform. It’s about more than programs or policies, but building systems that ensure women everywhere have access to quality care, opportunities, and the dignity of being seen.

The initiative focuses on key areas like maternal and newborn care, menstrual equity, nutrition, access to the health workforce, and harnessing tech and innovation for scalable solutions. At its core, RenewHER wants to bring together government, private sector, and everyday citizens to create lasting change in how women’s health is prioritised in Nigeria.

To officially launch this vision, the RenewHER Gala is happening on September 11, 2025, at the Statehouse Banquet Hall in Abuja. It won’t just be a night of glitz but a gathering of leaders, innovators, and changemakers who believe women’s health deserves the national spotlight. Expect a presidential keynote, cultural performances, the unveiling of a new Women’s Health Nigeria digital hub and magazine, and the first-ever RenewHER campaign film. Awards will also be given to health innovators making a difference, alongside a powerful national pledge moment to commit to this movement.

RenewHER is more than an event. It’s a call to action, an intentional step to ensure that women’s health is not left behind but placed at the centre of the nation’s growth story. And September 11 marks just the beginning of that journey.

There’s something quietly beautiful about a city halfway across the world choosing to call Nigerians its own, and that’s exactly what just happened in Kisarazu, Japan.

At the just-concluded TICAD9 (Tokyo International Conference on African Development), Japan surprised many by naming Kisarazu — a coastal town about an hour from Tokyo — the official hometown for Nigerians. This isn’t just symbolic. It comes with special visa perks for Nigerian students, professionals, artisans, and even blue-collar workers keen to upskill.

So, why Kisarazu? The city already shares a history with Nigeria, as it was the training ground for Team Nigeria ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Now, it’s ready to open its doors even wider.

What makes this move meaningful is the intentional spirit behind it. Japan isn’t just offering visas, it’s extending a piece of itself. Kisarazu is becoming a hub for people-to-people exchanges, cultural connections, and mutual growth.

Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, also unveiled a bold $5.5 billion investment plan for Africa during TICAD9, emphasising the need for collaboration in business, youth empowerment, and regional integration, all rooted in the idea of mutual discovery.

Kisarazu city skyline with Nigerian and Japanese flags symbolizing friendship.

And for those wondering: the Nigerian delegation didn’t just attend the ceremony — presidential aides Bayo Onanuga and Temitope Ajayi toured Kisarazu right after, bringing home both the certificate and the warmth of the city.

This matters because Kisarazu offers real opportunities. Nigerians with technical, creative, or vocational skills can pursue meaningful work there. The city itself is known for its coastal charm, strong infrastructure, access to education and healthcare, and affordability compared to Tokyo. It’s a place where Nigerians can live, work, and thrive while belonging to a community that now sees them as family.

This isn’t just about opportunity, it’s a soft handshake across continents, wrapped in city lights and cultural exchange. Kisarazu now stands as a real place where Nigerians can both learn and belong.

Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson have just rewritten the story of “what’s possible” for Nigerians in the U.K., and it’s a moment worth celebrating. In May 2025, two British–Nigerians were sworn in as mayors of London boroughs—each shattering records and opening doors for the rest of us.

Opeyemi Bright, youngest Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham    At 29, Opeyemi Bright became Barking & Dagenham’s youngest ever Civic Mayor. Elected to the council at just 22, she quickly distinguished herself by championing financial transparency (drawing on her Chartered Accountant background) and community-driven initiatives. Born in East London to Nigerian parents—her mother once served as Hackney’s mayor—Opeyemi paused a thriving career in investment banking and tech to dedicate a year to this historic term. In her first address, she made clear that she sees this role not as a trophy but as a promise: to listen more than she speaks, to turn strategy into street-level impact, and to uplift every neighbourhood that shaped her.

Jason Jackson, the first Nigerian born Mayor of IslingtonNot far away in north London, Jason Jackson took office as Islington’s mayor—the first Nigerian-born person ever to hold the title since the borough’s founding in 1900. Jason’s journey began in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and continued through studies in Business Law, Media, and later Big Data at London universities. Elected to Islington Council in 2022, he brought with him a passion for social enterprise and ethical innovation. His inaugural speech was equal parts gratitude and challenge to build bridges across diverse communities, to harness technology for good, and to remind everyone that leadership means service.

Why does this matter? Because representation isn’t a footnote, it shapes how young Nigerians in the diaspora see their futures. Opeyemi and Jason show us that influence and integrity can go hand in hand, that faith and ambition aren’t competing forces, and that “you belong at the table” isn’t just a slogan, it’s reality.

Whether you’re in Barking or beyond, their rise to mayor reminds us: barriers break when we dare to lead. Here’s to the next generation of trailblazers—may they feel emboldened by these two historic firsts.

Lagos State is stepping up in the fight against domestic and sexual violence with a tech-driven approach. The Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has introduced an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot and a digital evidence-collection portal to make it easier and safer for survivors to seek help.

With just a simple message to 0812 893 7058, users can access legal aid, medical support, counseling, and emergency intervention without fear or barriers.

Beyond instant support, the digital evidence portal provides survivors with a secure space to document and store abuse records such as pictures, audio or video recordings, and medical reports, ensuring they have crucial evidence if they pursue legal action.

This initiative reflects a strong commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and giving them the tools they need to find justice. To use this tool, individuals can visit lagosdsvcms.org and click on the “Report” tab to submit their information.

Domestic and sexual violence remain critical issues, with many survivors struggling to come forward due to stigma and fear. By integrating technology into survivor support, Lagos State is creating a more accessible and responsive system. The WhatsApp chatbot allows for discreet outreach, ensuring privacy and security, while the evidence portal empowers individuals with a structured way to gather proof.

This move is a significant step forward in making support services more survivor-friendly. Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, highlighted that these tools are part of a broader effort to provide multiple avenues for justice and assistance. The hope is that by leveraging technology, more survivors will feel safe enough to seek help and hold perpetrators accountable.

If you or someone you know needs help, reach out via WhatsApp at 0812 893 7058 or call the toll-free helpline at 0800 033 3333 for confidential support. Visit Lagos DSVA for more resources.

In a significant move, the United States has granted an “Emergency Humanitarian Waiver” to ensure the continuation of HIV treatment programs in 55 countries, including Nigeria. This decision comes in response to a recent executive order that paused foreign aid funding, causing concerns about the disruption of essential health services globally.

The waiver allows millions of people living with HIV to maintain access to life-saving medications provided through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR supports over 20 million individuals worldwide, with Nigeria being a major beneficiary.

UNAIDS has welcomed this development, emphasizing its critical role in sustaining the global AIDS response. In Nigeria, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for the waiver.

NACA’s spokesperson, Toyin Aderibigbe, highlighted the importance of this support and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to mobilizing domestic resources to ensure the sustainability of its HIV response.

This waiver underscores the importance of international collaboration in health initiatives and highlights the need for countries to develop sustainable strategies to manage health crises independently.

What is iodine deficiency, and why is it considered a major public health issue worldwide?

Iodine deficiency is a significant public health issue because iodine is essential for producing thyroid hormones, which regulate growth, brain development, and metabolism. A lack of iodine can lead to developmental delays, goiter, and cognitive impairments, especially in children and pregnant women. In high-risk communities, this deficiency can prevent entire generations from reaching their full potential, impacting productivity and economic growth on a larger scale.

Can you explain how iodine deficiency affects both children and adults, and what the long-term consequences are if left untreated?

For children, especially those in their formative years, iodine deficiency can lead to severe developmental issues, including reduced cognitive ability and stunted growth. Adults may experience hypothyroidism, fatigue, and, in severe cases, heart problems. The long-term consequences can be intergenerational, perpetuating cycles of poverty and diminished health, which is why public health initiatives like salt iodization and education are crucial for prevention.

How prevalent is iodine deficiency globally, and are there specific regions or populations that are more affected?

Over two billion people globally are iodine-deficient, with many facing moderate to severe deficiency. Regions with iodine-deficient soils, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and parts of Europe, are most affected. Rural and low-income communities are particularly at risk, where access to iodized salt and fortified foods is often limited.

What are some common symptoms or signs that someone might be iodine deficient?

A common visible symptom is goiter, or a swelling in the neck, due to thyroid gland enlargement. Other signs include fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, dry skin, and cognitive sluggishness. Because many remain asymptomatic, awareness and preventive measures, like the use of iodized salt, are essential.

What steps is your organization taking to raise awareness about iodine deficiency, especially in high-risk communities?

Coach Ndali: Through the Louis Love Nest Foundation, we’ve committed to outreach initiatives that offer both immediate relief and education. Since July, in collaboration with the Sir Sam Modebe Foundation SSMF, we’ve conducted monthly sensitization programs across Anambra, reaching between 200-300 street children monthly and feeding over 400 children in October. This outreach also targets the promotion of iodine awareness, while supplying families with nutritious food and the knowledge to incorporate iodine in their diets.

Additionally, our Project STEAM 2024 initiative has brought together over 17 international coaches from Canada, the U.S., South Africa, Ghana, and Nigeria to provide free training in STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and skill acquisition. This October, we are reaching youth in high-risk communities, equipping them with essential skills for a brighter, self-sustaining future.

I want to take this moment to commend my parents, Prof. Ifeoma Modebe and Sir Sam Modebe, for their unwavering dedication to humanitarian work in Anambra State. I am equally grateful to Barr. B. N Oneh for helping me hatch and develop this initiative and to our sponsors — Francis Osaji of System Digits, Hon. Igwe Nike, and Oreoluwa Afe — for their generous contributions to support what we do.

A heartfelt thank you also to each of the coaches who dedicated their time to Project STEAM 2024; their expertise and guidance have been invaluable to the success of our mission.

How can individuals ensure they are getting enough iodine in their daily diet? Are there specific foods or supplements you recommend?

Simple choices like using iodized salt can make a difference. Other iodine-rich foods include seafood, dairy products, eggs, and seaweed. In our outreach, we encourage the use of iodized salt and the inclusion of these foods whenever possible.

Are there any misconceptions about iodine deficiency that you’d like to address?

A major misconception is that iodine deficiency only affects developing countries. This is a global concern, even in developed nations, and everyone needs iodine daily. By dispelling these myths, we stress that iodine intake is vital across all ages and regions.

What role do governments and policymakers play in tackling iodine deficiency, and are there any key initiatives or programs that have been particularly successful?

Governments are crucial, particularly through salt iodization policies and public health initiatives like the UNICEF-Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) Elimination Program, which has partnered with countries to promote iodized salt. Continued investment in these initiatives is essential for long-term impact.

How can schools, communities, and local organizations get involved in supporting World Iodine Deficiency Day?

Schools and communities can partner with us to organize workshops, distribute materials, and equally with governmental institutions/health organizations for greater outreach. Local advocacy for iodized salt and nutrition education can also help raise awareness.

Looking ahead, what are some of the biggest challenges in eradicating iodine deficiency, and what gives you hope for the future?

Challenges include ensuring accessibility to iodized salt in remote regions and maintaining public awareness. However, the dedication we’ve witnessed from our monthly outreach in Anambra, our collaborations with institutions like Enugu State Young Farmers Associations and Ephesus Gatherings that leant us their platforms to address the youths ensuring the success of Project STEAM 2024, makes me hopeful. Through these collaborative efforts, and with continued support from dedicated leaders and partners, I believe we can build stronger, healthier communities.

The Louis Love Nest Foundation and Project STEAM 2024 are creating a legacy of positive change through nutrition, health, and education — one community at a time.

I want to take a moment to wholeheartedly commend my parents, Prof. Ifeoma Modebe and Sir Sam Modebe, for their unwavering commitment to humanitarian work in Anambra State. Their dedication has inspired countless lives, and I am immensely grateful to them for setting such a remarkable example.

I also want to extend a special appreciation to Barr. B. N Oneh for collaborating with me in bringing this initiative to life. This project would not be where it is today without her input and support.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our generous sponsors—Francis Osaji of System Digits, Hon. Igwe Nike, and Oreoluwa Afe—for supporting and believing in our mission. Your sponsorship has been invaluable in helping us make a difference in the lives of so many.

Lastly, to all the coaches who took the time and energy to contribute to Project STEAM 2024, your dedication has been instrumental. Thank you for your expertise and commitment to empowering communities across the globe.

We know what you’re thinking right now. Gosh another coronavirus public service announcement?! Well here’s the deal. Information is power and we realize that we should not assume that everyone knows about it just because we know!

The level of misinformation out there gives us a great cause for concern. People are spewing out theories and stating them as though they are facts. There’s nothing we haven’t heard, especially on these Internet and social media streets. From people saying it’s not real, to people saying it’s a “disease for the rich,”  to people saying “its caused by 5G” or that “ginger, lemon, and hot water can cure coronavirus.” Oh. And can we talk about the fact that some people are still adamantly going to places of worship in crowds? And having house parties? Come on now. Ignorance is a huge factor to blame for this disease being spread like wildfire.

So at every chance we get, it is important that we do our part to keep educating people about coronavirus and how to avoid getting infected.

We love this video put together by the staff of Euphorique PR & SPS Media to help raise more awareness about the pandemic.

Watch and share – especially with those people in your life who still don’t get it.

Stay safe queens!

For many people, this quarantines season has really put a damper on romantic relationships, especially for those who were looking to get into new relationships. I mean how can you go on dates with the whole social distancing situation? Well there’s always online dating right? Exactly.

Well, Daniel Ahmadizadeh and Christopher Smeder understand this perfectly well, so they designed ‘Quarantine Together,’ a dating app for exactly this era we’re living in.

One of the unique things about the app is that when two users get introduced, they know nothing about each other except their names. According to Daniel, this erases the superficial impulse to use physical appearance as a yardstick to determine whether or not you want to talk to someone.

According to CNN, the app is text-based. Everyday at 6 p.m., the app asks its registered users whether they washed their hands. If they say yes, they are introduced to another user by text. After 15 minutes, the matched users will be offered a link to video chat.

Daniel says ‘Quarantine Together’ is  different from other online dating apps because,“In quarantine, other apps are not repositioning what people do…. ‘Quarantine Together’ is specific to how people are living in this time.”

Speaking further about the uniqueness of the app and why its relevant in these current times we live in, he says:

“With this app, there are no rejections…it’s less about your photo or your bio, it’s more about actually being able to talk to another person…and right now is not the time to get rejected. Right now is the time to be empathetic.”

Would you try this app?

African Queens keep earning these global accolades and we couldn’t be prouder.

Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, founder of Stand to End Rape – S.T.E.R Initiative was on Wednesday, named  Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2019 for her contributions to ensuring gender equality and fighting sexual and gender based violence.

The very excited ‘Seun made the announcement via her Twitter page:

With more than 500 people from across the commonwealth that were nominated for the award, Ayodeji was selected from 16 finalists and four regional winners.

Here’s an excerpt from her acceptance speech:

This award reminds me that when young people don’t look away in the face of injustice, and say ‘no’ to cultural biases, we have the capacity to create change because we are magic.

Winning this award encourages me to keep working hard to build a safe community for women, girls and men in Nigeria and that my story is valid.

To my team and I, the award is a reminder that our work is seen, felt and should not stop now.

Our organisation provides medical, legal, mental health and psychosocial support, and empowerment services – depending on the requirement. In certain instances, we provide shelter access and financial support to survivors.

Having experienced sexual violence myself, I understand the cultural barrier of speaking up, and the lapses or lack of services available.

This award is a reaffirmation that elimination of sexual violence in Nigeria and other Commonwealth Countries is important and a core agenda of the Commonwealth Secretariat as we work towards achieving a ‘Connected Commonwealth’.

Seun, a survivor of sexual violence, set up the Stand to End Rape initiative to  help raise awareness about violence against women and girls through policy advocacy, prevention and support for victims. The organization trains healthcare providers on sexual violence response mechanisms, donates HIV test kits to community health care centers and more. Her advocacy has reached over 200,000 people and provided pro bono medical, legal, mental health and empowerment services to thousands of victims.
