Africa’s biggest film festival returns – bolder and more dynamic than ever. The 14th edition of the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is back, bringing fresh ideas, global conversations, and powerful creative connections to the continent’s film scene.

Scheduled to take place from November 2nd to 8th, 2025, this year’s festival is themed “Rhythms of the Continent: The Afrobeats Film Movement.” The event will celebrate the fusion of Nigeria’s thriving music culture and the African film industry, exploring how Afrobeats—a global sound rooted in African rhythms and storytelling – is shaping a new creative identity for African cinema and inspiring cross-industry collaborations.

On opening night,“Three Cold Dishes” a film directed by Oluseyi Asurf and executive produced by global superstar Burna Boy and award-winning actress Osas Ighodaro will premiere. The film stars Osas Ighodaro, Wayidi Adeleke, Wale Ojo, Fat Toure, Femi Jacobs. The film follows the gripping story of three young women who, after being trafficked as teenagers, unite years later to execute a daring revenge on the men who once exploited them.

A major highlight of this year’s festival is the launch of the AFRIFF Film and Content Market (AFCM)- Nigeria’s first and only film and content marketplace. This groundbreaking addition will serve as a structured business hub for filmmakers, distributors, buyers, and investors to connect, negotiate, and close deals. The AFCM will foster content licensing, co-production agreements, and international distribution partnerships, unlocking new commercial opportunities for African films and creative content.

The AFCM will welcome global media groups, studios, institutions, and partners including MTN, Goldfinch, SOOP, SPCINE, the Lagos State Government, and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture & the Creative Economy (FMACCE). Their participation underscores AFRIFF’s growing reputation as a global platform for meaningful collaboration and industry development.

“AFRIFF has always been a bridge between creativity and opportunity,” said Chioma Ude, Founder and Executive Director of AFRIFF. “With the Afrobeats Film Movement and the launch of the AFRIFF Film and Content Market, we’re not just celebrating art – we’re building an ecosystem that empowers African creatives to take ownership of their stories, their businesses, and their place on the global stage.”

Beyond screenings and showcases, AFRIFF 2025 will feature a series of industry sessions, masterclasses, and workshops designed to equip filmmakers with the skills and insights needed to thrive in today’s evolving media landscape. Topics will cover international co-productions, content commissioning, film distribution, marketing, and financing.

The week-long festival will culminate in the AFRIFF Globe Awards, a prestigious ceremony celebrating excellence in African and diaspora cinema. Awards will recognize outstanding achievements in feature films, documentaries, shorts, animation, directing, acting, screenwriting, and more.

During the festival, over 100 films from across Africa and the diaspora will be screened, including a documentary titled “Afroculture: The Making,” which focuses on Flavour’s rise in the Afrobeats era, highlighting the diversity, creativity, and resilience of African storytellers and serving as the closing film for the festival.

With its rich blend of business, education, and entertainment, AFRIFF 2025 promises to be a truly transformative experience for filmmakers, creatives, and audiences alike.

There’s a new stage play coming to town — and it’s already got everyone asking, “What happened to the 1%?” 👀

99% Virgin, showing live at the Lagos International Theatre Festival, tells the story of Olamide — a 29-year-old “good Christian girl” whose world spins out of control after one almost-crossed line with her situationship, Tunde.

Between late-night panic and awkward family talks, Olamide is forced to confront her faith, her desires, and the expectations that come with being a “good girl” in today’s world. It’s funny, bold, and painfully relatable, the kind of story that feels a little too close to home for many women navigating modern love and belief.

Directed by Bunmi Awolowo, a rising voice in contemporary Nigerian theatre, 99% Virgin promises laughter, honesty, and moments that make you pause — the good kind. It’s not just about purity or perfection; it’s about the real tension between conviction and confusion, and how faith fits into it all.

Catch the play live at the MUSON Centre, Ìtàn Garden, Onikan, Lagos, on November 15 and 16, from 3 PM to 4 PM.

Tickets: ₦10,000 — available via eventporte.com/99virgin.

Whether you go for the drama, the comedy, or the reflection, one thing’s for sure, you’re in for certified enjoyment.

Chandler Moore and Naomi Raine have announced that they’re stepping away from Maverick City Music — and I’m sitting here processing it. Two of the voices who helped define modern worship are now choosing new chapters, and there’s something bittersweet and hopeful in that.

Chandler called it a “God-led transition” after years of pouring into the collective. He said Maverick was something he poured his heart into, so saying goodbye feels like letting go of a child. But the dream hasn’t changed — he’s stepping into a season where his story, his voice, and his purpose can stand on their own.

Naomi shared her side too. After much prayer and reflection, she said it’s time to walk in the calling she feels individually. Being part of Maverick changed her life — what began with folks singing in a shed grew into something she could never have imagined. She emphasised: this is not an end, but a new beginning.

I’m thankful for all they gave through Maverick — the songs, the worship, the doors they helped open. And as they move into what’s next, I’m excited to see what each will birth. God’s not done yet.

I finally sat down to watch the Ruth & Boaz movie on Netflix, produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, and I’m so glad I did. Bible-inspired films don’t come around often, so when one lands in the Top 10 across countries, you know it’s striking a chord.

Early in the film, Naomi (played by Phylicia Rashad) says, “Finding love, true love is one of God’s greatest wonders.” That line lingered with me. The story wastes no time showing us why love — in all its forms — matters. Ruth (Serayah) isn’t just wrestling with romance; she’s figuring out who she really is versus who everyone expects her to be. She even walks away from her singing career with no money to fall back on, a decision that felt brave and painfully relatable.

Naomi’s heartbreak hit me the hardest. She loses her husband, her son, her home, and the security she built her life around. Watching her throw away her cross was one of those moments that said so much without words, how grief can shake your faith in ways you never thought possible.

But what I loved most was Ruth’s determination. Instead of folding, she takes up work in the vineyards, and that choice leads her straight into destiny. And then there’s her connection with Boaz (Tyler Lepley). The chemistry was sweet and believable, enough to make me smile more than once. When Ruth admits she hadn’t been fully honest, and Boaz replies that he should have listened to what she wasn’t saying… whew. That kind of grace in love feels rare on screen.

The film also reminded me of what community should look like. When the church rallied to rebuild Naomi and Ruth’s home, it felt like a picture of faith in action, not just prayer, but presence. And when Ruth sang “All My Life You Have Been Faithful” — goosebumps. By the time Naomi confessed that anger had blinded her to God’s goodness, I felt like the story had come full circle. Her putting the cross back at the end was a quiet but powerful finish.

Even little details stood out: the wine store that burned down but left the wine perfectly intact, like a symbol that sometimes what matters most is preserved. It’s those touches that make the story more than just a retelling; it’s personal, emotional, and full of hope.

If you haven’t watched Ruth & Boaz yet, you’re honestly missing one of Netflix’s most moving stories this season. It’s faith, it’s romance, it’s redemption, and it’s worth every minute.

Naomi Raine has given us so many unforgettable worship moments, and with “Jesus Over Everything” (released August 2025), she’s done it again — this time with a project that feels intimate, raw, and full of energy. Recorded live in Las Vegas, the album has that unfiltered, in-the-room feel that makes you want to sing along even on first listen.

Standout tracks? Her new version of “God Will Work It Out” has been trending everywhere, and for good reason. It’s one of those songs that feels like a balm when life gets overwhelming. Then there’s “Be Glad,” a brighter, lighter moment. It has this joyful lift that feels like a rest to your mood. Both tracks are easy favourites, but honestly, the whole album flows like a live playlist you didn’t know you needed.

What makes “Jesus Over Everything” so easy to love is its versatility. You don’t need to be in a worship mood to enjoy it — it works whether you’re getting ready in the morning, stuck in Lagos traffic, or winding down at night. It’s worship, yes, but it’s also just really good music.

And with Naomi set to hit the stage alongside Tasha Cobbs Leonard in October for their Naomi & Tasha Live in Concert tour, this album feels like the perfect warm-up.

So if you haven’t pressed play on “Jesus Over Everything” yet, this is your sign. It’s heartfelt, refreshing, and might just be the album you keep coming back to all year.

Tom Bancroft’s art has shaped childhoods everywhere — from Mushu in Mulan to the world of The Lion King. But after more than a decade at Disney, he walked away from Hollywood’s biggest studio to follow a different calling: bringing the story of Jesus to the big screen.

His latest project, Light of the World, is a hand-drawn 2D animated feature that reimagines the life of Christ through the eyes of young disciple John. Viewers will watch John witness miracles, wrestle with doubt, and ultimately discover faith in a way that feels both intimate and epic.

For Bancroft, this film is personal. After years of animating fantasy tales, he wanted to create something that carried eternal weight. He’s said this might be the project he’s most proud of, not because of box office buzz, but because of its purpose.

What makes Light of the World stand out is its throwback style. Think ‘90s Disney — textured lines, hand-drawn frames, and that warmth that only pencil-on-paper can bring. Bancroft and his co-director, John Schafer, poured years into this film, determined to tell the gospel story with beauty and reverence, but also with accessibility for younger generations.

The film premieres in U.S. theatres tomorrow, September 5, bringing something rare to the box office: a faith-based animated movie crafted outside the machine of big studios. It’s not just another retelling, it’s a labour of love, designed to remind audiences of the timeless power of the story at its core.

For the man who once gave Mushu his spark, this isn’t just a career shift; it’s proof that even in animation, faith can lead the way.

If you’ve seen A Week Away on Netflix, you’ll know it’s not your typical teen movie. Imagine High School Musical vibes, but set at a Christian summer camp. Think campfires, music, and first love, but woven into a faith-based story about second chances.

The film follows Will, a troubled teen who finds himself at a Christian summer camp. Between the catchy reimagined songs, the hopeful themes, and the sweet romance, it’s earned fans who describe it as “wholesome,” “uplifting,” and the kind of feel-good comfort watch you can put on again and again. Of course, some have called it cheesy and predictable — but that’s part of its charm. It’s light, it’s heartfelt, and it leaves you humming long after.

But the story doesn’t end there. A Week Away has now grown into a full series, taking the same idea — faith, friendship, and camp life — but with brand new characters and stories at Camp Aweegaway. It’s not a retelling of the movie, but a continuation of its spirit. Instead of just one weekend of music and camp adventures, the series stretches those themes into a season-long journey with competitions, challenges, and the emotional highs and lows of growing up.

The episodes lean into the same strengths that made the movie a hit: vibrant music, hopeful storytelling, and that sense of community and belonging that faith-based stories often bring. Streaming exclusively on Angel Studios, the seven-episode series drops new episodes every Thursday, giving fans more time to sink into the camp experience and watch the new cast create fresh bonds.

Whether you loved the movie and want more, or you’re discovering it all for the first time, A Week Away now offers both: a one-sitting film that feels like a summer playlist, and a series that expands it into something bigger, brighter, and ready to keep growing.

Something powerful is happening in music right now: Christian songs are showing up on the Billboard Hot 100, one of the world’s biggest charts. For years, worship music was heard mainly in churches and Christian spaces. Now, it’s reaching millions outside the walls, and people are listening.

Brandon Lake and Jelly Roll’s Hard Fought Hallelujah has held its ground on the Hot 100 for 22 weeks. Forrest Frank’s Your Way’s Better has been on for 13 weeks and counting. These aren’t small wins; they’re history-making moments that prove faith-filled music has a place in today’s mainstream soundscape.

What makes this moment even more remarkable is the timing. In a world that often feels uncertain, people are leaning into songs that speak of hope, honesty, and a love bigger than themselves. Worship music isn’t just about Sunday services anymore; it’s becoming a soundtrack for everyday life.

This crossover is more than a trend; it’s a reminder that music rooted in faith has the power to unite, inspire, and heal even on global stages. And right now, it seems the world is ready to listen.

Rena Wakama is more than a basketball coach; she’s the quiet force behind Nigeria’s rise on the continental stage. At just 33, she has already made history twice, first as the first female coach to win back-to-back AfroBasket titles, and now by leading D’Tigress to a record fifth straight championship in Abidjan.

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, but deeply rooted in Nigerian heritage, Rena’s journey has been one of resilience and vision. After college basketball at Western Carolina University and playing for Nigeria in 2015, she switched to coaching, determined to build something lasting. In 2023, she became the first female head coach of D’Tigress, opening tryouts across the US, Europe, and Nigeria to bring in fresh talent. Critics doubted her, but the results silenced them.

D’Tigress Coach Rena Wakama

Her leadership reached new heights in 2024 when she guided the team to the Paris Olympics quarterfinals — the first African basketball team to get there — earning her FIBA’s Best Coach award. And this August in Abidjan, Nigeria celebrated again as her team, with just six training sessions compared to other teams’ months of preparation, stayed focused and mentally strong to claim another AfroBasket crown. “It’s the Nigerian spirit,” she said after the final. “We are resilient. We play for something bigger than ourselves. We are leaving a legacy.”

Earlier this year, Rena also joined the WNBA’s Chicago Sky as assistant coach, breaking barriers off the continent and showing that Nigerian talent belongs on every stage.

Her journey is proof that real leadership doesn’t need to be loud; it just needs to be faithful, focused, and committed to lifting others higher.

Angela White (aka Blac Chyna) is back — with something softer, slower, and surprisingly refreshing.

Her new track“I Am,” just dropped today, and while it leans more toward spoken-word than traditional music, it’s definitely a vibe. Sonic affirmation meets mellow beat. Think sound bath, but with scripture in the subtext.

She opens the track with:
“In a world often overshadowed by greed, hatred, and deception, I discovered the path to true peace through Jesus Christ.”

There’s no hook, no hype — just Chyna (well, Angela) reflecting on who she is now.
From there, she walks us through a series of gentle affirmations:
“I am at peace with my past and excited for my future. I forgive myself and learn from my mistakes.”

It’s calm. Grounded. Confident.

If you’ve been following her public transformation — baptisms, name reclaiming, lifestyle switch-ups — this track feels like a sonic journal entry. She’s not preaching, just being. And somehow, that makes the message land harder.

It’s giving spiritual girl era.
It’s giving soft strength.
It’s giving “Jesus changed me, and I actually like who I’m becoming.”

Whether you’re into the music or just curious about her journey, “I Am” by Blac Chyna is worth a listen. Not for the charts, but for the calm it carries. The track ends with a simple declaration: “I am chosen.”

And yes, we’ll definitely be replaying this one.
