It’s no longer news — women are not waiting around for perfect conditions or inflated salaries. They’re building multiple streams, securing soft lives, and rewriting the rules of wealth. From tech to trade, smart side hustles are giving women more than “extra cash” — they’re unlocking freedom, options, and confidence.

So what are the smart side hustles women are leaning into right now?

1. Freelancing in High-Demand Skills

Think content writing, copyediting, UI/UX design, digital marketing, and virtual assistance. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and LinkedIn are where women are pitching, pricing, and profiting all from their laptops. You don’t need to know everything, just something. Free resources on YouTube or Google can help you grow fast and earn faster.

2. Personal Shopping via Shein, AliExpress & Co.

People want trendy outfits, accessories, or household items, but many don’t know how to order online, or they simply don’t want to. That’s where this hustle comes in. Women are helping others shop on platforms like Shein, AliExpress, and even Amazon, managing everything from size guides to delivery tracking. You charge a small fee or build your profit into the order. It’s low-risk, service-based, and in high demand.

3. Social Media Management

There are businesses everywhere, but not all of them know how to “show up” online. If you can create content, schedule posts, manage DMs, or write engaging captions, you can land clients fast. You don’t need a marketing degree — just creativity, consistency, and a working phone. Many women start with one client and grow from there.

Young African woman working on side hustles like freelancing, personal shopping, and hairdressing to grow her income.

4. Mobile Beauty & Wellness Services

Makeup artists, nail techs, and massage therapists are ditching shop rent and taking their skills to the client. House calls are not only convenient for customers, they’re lucrative for you. With a well-stocked kit and good word-of-mouth (or Instagram reviews), you can build a premium service without needing a physical salon.

5. Reselling (Fashion, Food, Skincare — You Name It)

Whether it’s thrift fashion, perfume oils, hair extensions, zobo, or skincare in bulk, women are flipping products for profit. You can sell from your house, on WhatsApp, Instagram, or even Jumia. It’s not about how big you start, it’s how well you brand, price, and serve.

Side hustles aren’t just a trend — they’re a strategy.
A way for women to stay empowered, take up space, and fund the lives they truly want. Whether it’s for “japa” goals, savings, or just the soft life God promised, women are moving differently. And smartly.

So don’t just scroll and wish.
Learn. Launch. Earn.
Your next stream of income might be a DM, delivery, or decision away.

So, should you be a CEO or collect your steady 9–5 paycheck? It’s one of those questions that never gets old. Some people say a regular job is “settling” while others believe entrepreneurship is just stress with a fancy title — especially when “be your own boss” sounds more glamorous than sitting in traffic to work every day.

Truth is, both sides have their perks and their wahala. A job gives structure, benefits, and security (especially in this economy, where stability is gold). You can plan your income, save, and grow within an organisation while learning skills that still pay off outside the office. A job offers structure, stability, and a guaranteed paycheck. You know when money’s coming, and that peace of mind is priceless.

But entrepreneurship promises freedom, creativity, and the thrill of building something that’s truly yours. You call the shots, decide your hours, and directly see the results of your effort. Yet it also means facing the risk, the slow months, and the “what next?” moments alone.

The sweet spot? Doing both.
Having a job doesn’t mean you can’t build something on the side. In fact, it’s smart. Your 9–5 funds your 5–9. The world we live in now rewards multiple streams, not just one title. You can be an employee and an entrepreneur.

Still, let’s be real, it’s not easy. Balancing deadlines and dreams can be draining. You’ll finish office work only to switch into “business mode,” juggling exhaustion, late nights, and the constant pressure to keep up. It takes boundaries, discipline, and a reminder that rest isn’t a luxury; it’s fuel.

So maybe the real goal isn’t choosing one over the other, but learning how to build wisely — stability first, then scalability. In this economy, nobody should rely on just one source of income.

Because at the end of the day, the dream isn’t just to “be your own boss.” It’s to build a life where your work — job or business — actually works for you.

Access Bank has opened applications for its 2025 edition of Womenpreneur Pitch-a-Ton, and trust me, this is something you’ll want to know if you’re running your own business. This programme is all about lifting up women entrepreneurs — giving them training, mentorship, exposure, and yes, funding.

The window is open from September 19 to October 3, 2025. You’ll need to have a registered business, be running it for at least a year, and you must own at least 50 % equity in it. So it’s for serious women who are ready to take the next step.

What makes it sweet is that this edition comes with an intensive Mini-MBA programme (partnering with the International Finance Corporation), plus mentoring from pros who’ve been there. There’s N17.5 million in grants up for grabs for the top businesses, and even the finalists who don’t win get consolation support and business help. So it’s not just about winning — it’s about growing.

Since 2019, the programme has trained hundreds of women and given out grants worth around USD 175,000. It’s become one of those moments where you see community, resources, and ambition meet. If your business has been around, your heart is in it, and you’re ready to scale, this might be your time.

Anto Lecky has just been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Creative Economy to the Edo State Government, a role that feels like the natural next step in a career defined by creativity, intention, and quiet reinvention.

Though many came to know her during her time on Big Brother Naija, Anto has long stepped beyond the expectations that often come with reality TV. Over the years, she has worked across industries — from sports development to film production — taking on roles that blend storytelling, strategy, and a deep appreciation for Nigeria’s cultural landscape.

Now, she’s returning to her roots in Edo State with a mission that is as personal as it is professional.

Announcing the appointment on Instagram, Anto Lecky shared her excitement, writing, “With the return of our priceless Benin Bronzes, upcoming museum projects, and a growing creative sector, Edo is poised to become a leader in Nigeria’s tourism and cultural economy. I am honoured to serve my state and my country.”

BBN's Anto Lecky appointed as Edo State’s SSA on Tourism and Creative Economy

This new chapter comes at a time when Edo State is actively investing in its creative future with historical artefacts returning home, a deeper focus on cultural preservation, and growing global interest in local tourism. Anto’s background, both at home and abroad, uniquely positions her to play a meaningful role in that work.

It’s also a significant moment for visibility. For the young women, creatives, and those who often feel overlooked in public service, Anto’s appointment is a reminder that you can show up fully as yourself in your own lane, in your own time, and still lead, still matter, still make impact.

Her presence in government, backed by years of diverse experience, is not just symbolic; it’s strategic. And it serves as a reminder that culture isn’t just something we consume. It’s something we can shape, protect, and lead through.
