So there’s this viral video that has got everyone talking. A guy and his girlfriend were hanging out at Ikeja Mall, enjoying a romantic date. Then out of nowhere, the girlfriend proposed to him:

The conversations about this video on social media mostly revolve around people’s shock that a woman actually proposed to a man.

However, we think that most people are missing the key lesson to be learned from this incident. The fact that she proposed to her boyfriend is not the issue. The real lesson to learn here is this: Don’t propose to your boo in public if you are not really sure if he/she is indeed ready to get married.

These days, proposals aren’t really such a surprise anymore. Perhaps the manner in which the proposal is carried out may be a surprise, however; the actual decision to propose isn’t a surprise a lot of the time. When a couple are in a serious relationship, there is a high likelihood that future plans have been discussed, the possibility of marriage, etc. Naturally, you would know whether your boo is showing signs of being ready for marriage. Based on this knowledge, a proposal happens.

If the aforementioned haven’t been discussed, and you are really not sure how bae may be feeling about marriage, then please don’t propose in public to save yourself the embarassment and discouragement if he/she says no. Do your proposal in private so that you can both have the opportunity to express yourselves freely and honestly without the added pressure of spectators in public trying to Snapchat this sensitive, private moment.
